We spent the other day learning about Brown Pelicans during our Ocean/Beach Unit. We read the first three books in the Adventures Of Pelican Pete Series. I had purchased some of these at a little bookstore in Sanibel Island this summer. Cale and I also bought the little stuffed Pelican Pete to go along with them. It's a good thing we did. Caleb has played with Pete and slept with Pete since then.
This would be Pete taking his first flight, now that his flight feathers have grown in. Pelicans are born completely bald and quite an ugly gray color.
This is Pete preening his feathers. That's why his wings are up. Brown Pelicans keep their feathers in very good condition. They clean and brush them with their beaks. They then spread oil on them to keep themselves waterproof and buoyant.
Here is Caleb finger painting with "ocean water." You can see some number threes that he made.
Next up, Killer Whales!
