We have had so much fun with our Ocean/Beach Unit. To wrap up we learned about Killer Whales and Manatees. Since going to Sea World this summer Caleb has been into Killer Whales. It's hard not to be after seeing the Believe show there. I have always loved Manatees, so we threw those in for me, but Caleb likes them too.
Caleb made a killer whale and then had it perform a show like the one he saw at Sea World. We learned how Killer Whales are Mammals and not whales at all, but a type of dolphin.
We also talked about how big Killer Whales are. Female Killer Whales grow to about 22 feet long. We measured how long 22 feet is and marked it on the floor. Then we measured Caleb to see how big he was compared to a Killer Whale. Caleb is 3 feet 4 inches tall, quite a bit smaller than our Killer Whale friends.
Next it was Caroline's turn. And you guessed it, she's quite a bit smaller than a Killer Whale too. Caleb insisted we measure Daddy compared to the Killer Whale. He said that Daddy is really big.
But guess what, even Daddy is smaller than a Killer Whale. =) In the picture below you can see Daddy's mark and my mark. If you look all the way passed the table to the pantry door, that is where the bottom of the Killer Whale would be. I couldn't even get the whole thing in a picture. Needless to say we will not be having a Killer Whale over for dinner any time soon. They would take up our whole living room, dinning room and part of the hallway.
