Caleb's favorite activity with the Moon Unit so far has been making a Moon Cake. We read the book "What the Moon Is Like" and then made this cake. I found the recipe while surfing around on the internet. For the life of me I can not remember which sight. It was not a homeschooling blog though.
MOON CAKE
(Mix and Bake in 9 inch Round Cake Pan)
To make Moon Dust Mix Together:
1 ½ Cups Flour ½ Cup Brown Sugar
½ Cup Sugar 1 tsp Salt
4 Tbl Cocoa
Form 3 Craters:
1 Large crater in center, 1 medium crater and 1 small crater anywhere.
In Medium crater add 1 tsp Baking Soda
In Large crater add 5 Tbl Melted Butter
In Small crater add 1 tsp Vanilla
In Medium crater pour 1 Tbl Vinegar (will bubble like volcano)
When foam stops add 1 cup Milk and mix together to make Moon Mud.
Sprinkle with ¾ cup Mini Marshmallows (moon rocks)
Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Here is Caleb demonstrating how rocks smash into the moon to form craters.
Caleb enjoys the finished product.
