We started our Bird's Nest and Egg Unit today. Since we have put up our bird feeders, Caleb and I are quite interested in learning all we can about our feathered friends. It is almost time for nest building and egg laying to begin and we thought we'd do a little more in depth learning on these subjects.
Caleb enjoyed an egg activity that I found online through the Big Backyard Magazine's website. We used different types of fruit to represent the different sizes of eggs bird's lay. Did you know that a Humming Bird's eggs are the size of a pea? And Hummingbirds only lay two eggs at a time.
We looked up the different types of birds, the types of nests they make and the types of eggs they lay in our Birds, Nests and Eggs field guide.
And then we talked about the fact that big birds lay big eggs and small birds lay small eggs. We also discussed how some eggs are camouflaged and some are not and why this is.
